Keeping scorpions out

Exclusion is the only thing that produces a lasting change. Chemicals suppress the insects scorpions eat; sealing removes the door they walk through.

Where they come in

Block wall weep holes
The small gaps left at the base of block walls for drainage. A standard entry route, and the most commonly missed. Screened, not filled — they exist for a reason.
Under the garage door
A worn rubber seal leaves a gap along the whole width of the opening. Replace the sweep and check the side seals too.
Pipe and conduit penetrations
Where plumbing, gas or electrical passes through the wall. Foam and seal.
Stucco expansion joints and cracks
Hairline to a credit card's width is enough. Caulk.
Window and door frames
Weatherstripping perished by the Yuma sun. Cheap to replace, easy to forget.
Roof and attic vents
Bark scorpions climb. A roof is not out of reach for them the way it is for other species.

What to use

Fine mesh

Stainless or bronze, for weep holes and vents. Scorpions push through plastic mesh.

Exterior caulk

Paintable, UV-stable. Cheap caulk fails within a Yuma summer and the gap reopens.

Expanding foam

For the deep voids around pipe entries. Trim and caulk over it once cured.

Door sweeps

Rubber, full width, on every exterior door and the garage.

The yard matters as much as the house

Scorpions come to the house because the yard supports them. Removing harbourage does more than another round of spray.

What professional exclusion looks like

A first visit should include a walk of the property with attention to entry points, a night UV inspection when the activity is indoors, treatment into voids and harbourage rather than a surface spray, and a written list of gaps that need closing. Expect follow-up visits: scorpion work is measured over months.

A fair warning about expectations. No honest company will promise zero scorpions after one visit in Yuma. The realistic goal is a large reduction and no indoor sightings — not the elimination of a species that has lived in this desert far longer than the houses have.
